[Picture of Two Glasses of Alpokat Smoothie]Ever since my dad went to Indonesia he has talked about an avocado smoothie that he adored when he was there a few years ago. He has tried to get the same thing here, and even in America, but to no avail. I decided to have a look on the net and managed to find the recipe. Here it is (thanks to Jonathan Hyatt from the recipezaar website).

Prep Time: 5 mins.,
Cooking Time: 10 mins.,
Serves: 2.

Equipment:

  • Electric Blender;
  • knife;
  • 2 tall glasses;
  • 1 small saucepan;

Shopping List:

  • 240ml (12 tbsp) Chocolate Milk;
  • 120ml (6 tbsp) Cold Cow’s Milk (Semi-Skimmed or Full Fat);
  • 100ml (5 tbsp) Water;
  • 100g (5 tbsp) Sugar;
  • Two Ripe Avocado Pears (remove crocodile skin, cut in half lengthwise and remove the stones);
  • One handful Crushed Ice.

To Make the Avocado and Chocolate Smoothie:
Make a simple sugar syrup by combining the sugar and the water in a small saucepan over a medium-high heat. Stir until the liquid is becomes clear. Remove from heat and let cool.

  • You could make a batch of the sugar syrup and keep in the fridge for further smoothies.

Spoon out the avocado pulp and place in a blender (you could use a hand blender and make up the smoothies in the cups, it saves on the washing up later). Add the syrup mixture and blend. Add the cold milk and blend again. Divide between 2 tall glasses. Top each serving with 1/2 the chocolate milk (to form a separate layer) and add the crushed ice.

This is very simple and easy to make, and is surprisingly delicious. As the avocado part of the smoothie is quite thick it does fill you up! Apparently one of these smoothies was never enough for my dad; he always bought another one!

I remember the Alpokat 30 years ago in Sumatra being made with Eagle Brand sweetened condensed milk, Hershey’s chocolate syrup,
a couple of avocado’s and crushed ice. Toss it all in a blender.
Yummy !
There used to be a place like Starbuck’s on Fillmore Street in San Francisco (near Pacific Heights) that regularly sold this.

Thanks R.Bennet, oddly enough my dad said that the Indonesian version was so delicious that it was almost necessary to immediately have a second one — but that when he asked for this smoothie in various places in the USA, none were close — and most were disgusting! lol. My dad says that our recipe is not perfect, but it is pretty close to the what he remembers getting in Indonesia.

I have a friend that grew up in Indo and he has taken me to an Indonesian restaurant a few times. There I had my first Alpokat and it was amazing. As an american who isn’t really into extreame exotic foods, this was awsome. He then took me to an Asian tea house where they made a almost exact replica of this same recipe and added boboa (bubbles-black pearl tapioca) to it! You talk about a tasty treat in the summer time! YUM!!

I have never heard of ‘Boboa’ (bubbles-black pearl tapioca) so I have just checked it on-line. It’s spelled boba, and is also known as bubble tea/pearl milk tea! Here’s some links which were useful:

I’m intrigued…I’ve gotta try this!
Thanks Jonathan for the tip and I will make it for my dad and see what he thinks too.
