Grizzly Bear & St. Vincent 2009/11/02

[Picture of St Vincent at O2ABC, 2009]Back in July we missed St.Vincent at Nice’n’Sleazy. So we were overjoyed when Donny told us Annie was playing again (so soon) — this time as support for Grizzly Bear at the O2ABC1.

How good was that? We’d been enjoying Veckatimest — don’t you just love it when the main act and the support are of equal interest?

St.Vincent it wasn’t;  it was just Annie on her own —  but she was superb.  Just her in a tight black mini dress, black tights, bright red lipstick and big hair. She is lanky, and at odds with her old guitar, so it’s strange to look at, yet hypnotic at the same time. Sadly for me she did not do ‘Your Lips are Red’, but she ripped out a great ‘Actor‘ on her own — just her and the guitar — after some technical difficulties with her midi set up. ‘Marry Me‘ was a real highlight.

It is true what they say about Annie Clark — she is probably the best female guitarist around.  This is witty and inventive, skilful and creative. She’s not a Swift nor a Tyler (nor even a Gabriela); this is edgy and fresh. Annie is the one to watch.

We loved it.

Grizzly Bear also had some minor technical difficulties which they tried to mask by asking the audience if we had any jokes! They played a lot of their older, sadder stuff, and to be honest, I think we preferred the new stuff from Veckatimest.

All-in-all, though, they were brilliant live — sure, they take turns singing, the harmonies echo the Beach Boys, and they play funny instruments — but they can still build up a tune to a kickin anthem full of melody hooks and distinctive soundscapes.

A great night out — and a huge thanks to granny for babysitting… and she’s booked for next week too (we’re seeing Beverley Knight again, and at the exact same venue)!
