I had a really nice chat with Oli about what games she played in the playground at school.  It was interesting to compare the games of today with what Mummy Ruth and I remembered of our playtime pursuits. (more…)

Strike! 2011/11/30

The children were off today from school and nursery because of the civil service strike action.

We really enjoyed meeting Daddy Dave at lunchtime in the bustle of the city centre, and everywhere just seemed different and fun.  I almost wished there were more strikes as it really was a special family time.

I don’t mean to disrespect the unions etc., but a lot of Daddy Dave’s work colleagues took the day off work for their kids, and all-in-all the feedback and vibe was very positive — which is a bit of a shame I suppose for the strikers!  I guess their aim was to disrupt and cause a fuss, but it seems to have given everyone an excuse for some family time, and the shops seem to have benefited from the unexpected Christmas shopping.

The amount of people I bumped into while shopping after lunch with the kids was unbelievable!  There was such a great spirit, and I think the strike has made us all feel a lot more Christmassy somehow.

[Poster of Micky Flanagan. Out Out Tour 2011]We got granny to babysit and headed for the King’s Theatre to see Micky Flanagan.  We paid over twenty quid to sit in the gods (aka “The Gallery”).  He had no support and did two parts with a 15 minute interval.  We were out before quarter to ten.  It was a Sunday night after all. Ride Letter Day 2011/10/10

Sunday was a Red Letter Day for us.  It was the day that DP learned to ride his bicycle without stabilisers. Yes! now all the family can ride bikes.

What we did was remove his pedals along with the stabilisers.  This gave him a “balance bike”. To be frank, purpose built balance bikes are a con when you think about it. (more…)

[Picture of Smurfs Movie 2011 poster]Papa and Charlie took Oli and DP to the cinema to see The Smurfs.  They loved it!

Oli seemed more switched on about the plot and the characters in so far as she talked about it — she reviewed the movie to me when I got home from the office.  DP was in agreement, but I noticed that he did not have the capacity for critique. Hmmn. That boy needs work!

From all accounts, it seemed to be a smashing film, and I am quite sad I missed it.

[B&W Pic of African Dancing]We’re back, in fact everyone’s back!  The sun’s shining, everyone’s happy. Good times!

Papa and Charlie have reported that India is really making progress (they keep on about us going out there with them sometime).  It was just magic to see them again.

My mother is back from helping out with the twins in England. Joobes is recovering well now.  We’re all so thankful for that.

Charlie took care of Oli and DP to let us grab a wee break, a much needed break, and off we went.  (more…)

[Bus tickets inward]DP has never been on a bus, so we decided that we would take a double decker into the city centre and back to give him that experience. Ruthie and I had never been on a bus together, and we have never travelled on a bus as a family, so what a brilliant idea!  (more…)

O yeah I had a plan. We’re doing Christmas, it’s the new oven, new kitchen, new dining scenario and all that.  I pre-ordered an ASDA grocery shop on-line on the 12th.  That is to say, AGES AGO. What could possibly go wrong? (more…)

[Picture of the Poster for Let It Snow]We were really looking forward to this afternoon’s “Standard Life: Let it Snow” at The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, presented by “wacky” percussionists Owen Gunnell and Olly Cox.

The Orchestra of Scottish Opera conducted by Gavin Sutherland with the help of  the Manor School of Ballet and members of Les Sirenes female choir– oh, and a special guest star — the fabulous Nicola Benedetti. (more…)

[Picture of Up by Disney Pixar]Tonight we all watched “Up” — the new movie from Pixar and Disney. Daddy Dave was brought to tears — big softie!

The kids seemed to enjoy it, which surprised me until I realised that so many so-called children’s movies and books have fairly adult content.

One of Olivia’s favourites (more…)
