[picture of Macavity the mystery cat by Oli devine]Ruth and I love poems, and Olivia enjoys TS Eliot’s daft poem about Macavity the mystery cat.  Even though Eliot was from the USA, it sounds familiar to Olivia — even the cat’s name — it’s like Mac Avity or McCavity or something Scottish, it’s not a million miles away from her beloved Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy (even though Lynley Dodd is from New Zealand!). It’s also like the ‘Meeow‘ (voiced by the great Stanley Baxter) cartoon featuring a cheeky wee ginger cat called Maisie MacKenzie, known as MaisieMac.

Eliot’s Macavity has natural rhythm and pace, good for speaking aloud — and the content is superb for children — there’s even a description from which Olivia drew a mugshot to help the police!

Anyway, here’s the full poem… (more…)

Oli has been using her old size 12 Barbie bike to get to nursery school all week, and while she loves bike riding, I’d noticed that she’s really outgrown this one.

She needed (more…)

DP has never had a brand new pram of his own, as both have been Olivia’s “hand me downs”. We still have the main pram, but I have found that I have been using the stroller more these days as he’s not a baby any more. DP walks now, so the stroller is just for him when he’s too tired, and he naps in it a lot, we need a new one that reclines.

So I had been looking for a while on the internet, (more…)

[picture of live Langoustines in See Woo Supermarket]They’re off again — Charlie and my dad are off to Singapore for three weeks.  Three weeks!   Good grief; they’re not long back from India!

DP adores his papa so much! And Oli is already missing them both. She stayed over with them on Friday night, and when she was dropped home late on Saturday afternoon, she was off colour.

When we dropped Oli off at theirs, Charlie made a delicious Chinese meal — and this inspired us to (more…)

[Picture of Alvin and the Chipmunks]Olivia stayed over at her papa’s on Friday night. She had a restless night as she is recovering from a cold but they ventured out on Saturday morning to the cinema… Olivia’s first ever movie! They took her to see ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks’ and she loved the whole experience.

Name Calling 2006/12/30

It is only in relatively recent times here and in North America that people have decided that their name is also what they are called — and that it is unchanging and fixed forever — with particular spellings, no changing while abroad, and no shortening, lengthening, traditional versions or pet names allowed!

How inflexible and Orwellian! Yuk! (more…)
