Mama’s Limoncello 2012/09/16

I have been making bottles of Limoncello as Christmas gifts!

Prep Time: 5 mins.,
Cooking Time: 10 mins.,
Serves: 2.

Equipment:

  • vegetable peeler;
  • small sharp knife;
  • bowl or jug;
  • bottles;
  • Cling film

Shopping List:

  • ten unwaxed lemons;
  • 75ml bottle of vodka;
  • 3 1/2 cups Water;
  • 2 1/2 cups Sugar.

To Make the Limoncello:
The peel is all we need for this recipe, so using the vegetable peeler, get long strips of peel from the lemons. Trim & discard the white pith from the peel using the knife.

Put the de-pithed peel strips into the jug and pour in the vodka before covering with cling film.  Leave alone for four days at room temperature.

Four Days later

Remove cling film and stir, pour into a large saucepan and heat on stove (medium heat) until sugar dissolves (about 5 mins) then let it all cool down to room temperature again.

[Photo of We Were Promised Jetpacks taken at ABCO2 gig in Glasgow]Yesterday was my main client’s Christmas work’s lunch. The entire office (about 40 of the Glasgow team plus  contractors/ freelancers) booked a “boutique hotel” (whatever that is) on Bath Street, and we had the usual sporadically served, cold Christmas rubbish food one has come to expect after years of experience.  (more…)

Strike! 2011/11/30

The children were off today from school and nursery because of the civil service strike action.

We really enjoyed meeting Daddy Dave at lunchtime in the bustle of the city centre, and everywhere just seemed different and fun.  I almost wished there were more strikes as it really was a special family time.

I don’t mean to disrespect the unions etc., but a lot of Daddy Dave’s work colleagues took the day off work for their kids, and all-in-all the feedback and vibe was very positive — which is a bit of a shame I suppose for the strikers!  I guess their aim was to disrupt and cause a fuss, but it seems to have given everyone an excuse for some family time, and the shops seem to have benefited from the unexpected Christmas shopping.

The amount of people I bumped into while shopping after lunch with the kids was unbelievable!  There was such a great spirit, and I think the strike has made us all feel a lot more Christmassy somehow.

[Poster of Micky Flanagan. Out Out Tour 2011]We got granny to babysit and headed for the King’s Theatre to see Micky Flanagan.  We paid over twenty quid to sit in the gods (aka “The Gallery”).  He had no support and did two parts with a 15 minute interval.  We were out before quarter to ten.  It was a Sunday night after all. [The Barber of Seville poster Scottish Opera]Last night, Mummy Ruth and I went to see The Barber of Seville at the Theatre Royal, although I guess as it was sung in Italian (despite being set in Spain), it ought to have been called Il barbiere di Siviglia, but anyway.

Now, it has to be said that I saw The Barber of Seville done in Glasgow way back in the early 1990s, and was blown away.  It set (more…)

Sunday was a Red Letter Day for us.  It was the day that DP learned to ride his bicycle without stabilisers. Yes! now all the family can ride bikes.

What we did was remove his pedals along with the stabilisers.  This gave him a “balance bike”. To be frank, purpose built balance bikes are a con when you think about it. (more…)

[Picture of Smurfs Movie 2011 poster]Papa and Charlie took Oli and DP to the cinema to see The Smurfs.  They loved it!

Oli seemed more switched on about the plot and the characters in so far as she talked about it — she reviewed the movie to me when I got home from the office.  DP was in agreement, but I noticed that he did not have the capacity for critique. Hmmn. That boy needs work!

From all accounts, it seemed to be a smashing film, and I am quite sad I missed it.

Lunar Eclipse/ Solstice 2010/12/21

[Picture of the lunar eclipse above the clyde 2010]I saw the lunar eclipse this morning.  This was my first eclipse, and so also my first lunar eclipse.  In fact, I often read about meteor showers or Mars being visible and think to myself that I will definitely remember to take a look later that night — and then I forget all about it. Today was no different, I knew about it, and I promptly forgot — until I was faced with it!  It was right ahead of me, and it was wonderful!

The cold air meant that the light was sharp and the colours bright.  I stopped on the bridge with a small group of wonderers, and we just gazed at the spectacle in the south west sky.  The shadow of our planet darkened out the moon, and then it appeared as a pinky red ring, with a red diamond.  Of course I tried to take a picture with my rubbish camera phone, but frankly I don’t think I could have really captured the event with any camera.

It was really cold, and it made my day.  To mark the winter season, the office heating broke down — ice trapped condenser fins.  Had to try to work all day with cold hands. Brrrr.

[Picture of the kids at concert Hall]Last year we took the kids to the Royal Convert Hall to see “wacky” percussionists Owen Gunnell and Olly Cox with Nicola Benedetti in “Let It Snow!“, and today at 3pm we saw them again — in “Heroes versus Villains” Children’s Classic Concerts at the concert hall again. How appropriate; tonight we’re off to see one of Daddy Dave’s musical heroes in concert. (more…)

We had a laugh on Friday morning at work.  I was declared to be looking like Terry Christian or Kevin Spacey, while David looked like Roy Hudd, Lynda looked like Family Guy’s Peter Griffin (but with Lois’s hair), Laura looked like a brunette Gwyneth Paltrow, and Michael looked like Chris Moyles or Andre Agassi.  The best was Wil — who looked like Murdoc from Gorillaz!

I was explaining all this to Ruthie after work by showing her videos from Youtube — and now the kids think the character of Murdoc is actually called “Wil”.  They actually LOVE Gorillaz’s music and have now watched all their HD videos several times — how mad is that.

Each time Murdoc appears, they shout in chorus “Wil!!!!”

My life is weird, non?

Here’s an embedded clip of Stylo from Gorillaz on YouTube.com…

[Still from Certified Copy the Movie]We went to the GFT last night to see “Certified Copy“.  WELL WORTH SEEING. **** We somehow managed to get a parking ticket after 8pm!  We always park there, and have always assumed the rule to be anything goes after 6pm. Oh well, 30 quid onto the ticket price for the first night out we’ve have in 18 months. (more…)

[Picture of Robey The Diet Coke Robot]The kids love to do arts and crafts, and we have a big cupboard filled with felt, paper, paint, pens, scissors, wool, glue, glitter and things like that.  However, tonight Daddy Dave was helping, and the kids wanted to make a robot.

Well, we started to look for things we could use — and in the recycle bin were some diet coke bottles.  Olivia spotted a cardboard box that (more…)
