I had a really nice chat with Oli about what games she played in the playground at school.  It was interesting to compare the games of today with what Mummy Ruth and I remembered of our playtime pursuits. (more…)

Strike! 2011/11/30

The children were off today from school and nursery because of the civil service strike action.

We really enjoyed meeting Daddy Dave at lunchtime in the bustle of the city centre, and everywhere just seemed different and fun.  I almost wished there were more strikes as it really was a special family time.

I don’t mean to disrespect the unions etc., but a lot of Daddy Dave’s work colleagues took the day off work for their kids, and all-in-all the feedback and vibe was very positive — which is a bit of a shame I suppose for the strikers!  I guess their aim was to disrupt and cause a fuss, but it seems to have given everyone an excuse for some family time, and the shops seem to have benefited from the unexpected Christmas shopping.

The amount of people I bumped into while shopping after lunch with the kids was unbelievable!  There was such a great spirit, and I think the strike has made us all feel a lot more Christmassy somehow.

Colin NorrisOnce again, loads of people have been getting in touch.  This time it is because the BBC ran a program about convicted serial killer Colin Norris.

They showed some old footage of “The Boyfriend” that had my sister, Joobes, and Colin Norris on stage.  We went to school with Colin.  When I heard that he was convicted of being a serial killer, I was very surprised. (more…)

[Picture of typical big building site]Daddy Dave always says that building things is male birth — the male equivalent of giving birth.  Lots of screaming, months of gestation, hours of labour and lost sleep, anxiety, worry, feelings of impossibility and inevitability. Utter fear, then look at how wonderful this THING is — gorgeous in every detail!

Daddy Dave has handed over his workload for the past two-and-a-half-years ot the people who will develop it on and actually realise it.  It’s a pretty momentous occasion, and the feeling of stress-being-lifted is as clear as day.

This is a weird adjustment and realignment period for us.  This is Daddy Dave’s baby we’re talking about here — and it’s a real big one too.  It’s gonna change this city forever! Drinkiepoos anyone?

[Picture of Scottish Opera Rgoletto Poster]Mummy Ruth bought tickets for really good seats for “Rigoletto” at the Theatre Royal before Christmas, so we have been looking forward to this for quite a while.

It is difficult to get to proper opera with small children.  We make do with Classical Concerts for Children, but we cannot keep away forever, can we?  Scottish Opera is also — for us — still something of a gamble, when we remember “The Magic Flute” fiascos — but having said that,  “La Bohème” was pretty good, and “Tosca” was a good night out. Strange to think that these were BEFORE we were married — that’s seven years ago. Shockerooni! (more…)

[scan of School Letter about Dental Care]Daddy Dave and I were pretty shocked with the latest missive from Olivia’s primary school. In Primary One, the very first year of schooling (children are four or five years of age, with baby teeth), just over half had normal teeth.  Of the 43.9 per cent of bad teeth, a whopping 14 per cent had severe decay!

In this day-and-age! Goodness me. The figures for the last year of the Primary school system — Primary Seven — is about the children’s adult set of teeth, so these kids get a wiped slate and a fresh start.

What a shame! The “bad teeth” numbers rose dramatically — what was 43.9 per cent in P1, has become nearly 81 per cent by P7. (more…)

Just a quick thank-you to everyone in internet world for all the weird and wonderful things that have been happening with our sites and blogs — especially for getting a picture of our daughter, Oli, aged just two-and-a-half onto the first page of Reddit.  The hits for this — our wee family blog also went ballistic.  Oh, and (completely unrelated), thanks to all those at Flikr for the stuff surrounding the picture of DP at Kelvingrove Art Galleries — he was just 7 months old at the time.  Funny how these two pictures are from the same year (2007).

Thanks too for all the comments, good and bad; we laughed out loud at times. Great fun! Cheers!

We were sent a link to the BBC iPlayer for “10 Things You Need to Know About Losing Weight”.  It purported to have the very latest scientific tips on losing weight.  It featured Dr Michael Mosely — the chap doing the brain programmes for the BBC.  He didn’t look fat, but scans showed that he was fat on the inside. That was surprising; we’d always assumed that only those who were fat on the outside got fat on the inside.

Frankly, we were surprised that there was a surprise — and also that there was another surprise in the programme.  Hey, TWO things were didn’t actually know beforehand — well done BBC! (more…)

Yogurt aisle in Sainsbury'sI quite often look up recipes on the internet, but this brings in problems — not just translating between measurements, but also translating what things are called.  To be honest, this drives me crazy at times, and to make matters worse, some of the US American terms can actually be found in supermarkets over here!  For example, I can buy “Baking Soda” right from the shelf, yet it is a North American term for Bicarb!  I have seen Bistro menus in Glasgow using “Zucchini” instead of “Courgette”.  All the British and European supermarkets have signs above the aisles for “Yogurt“, only the American-owned ASDA uses the American spelling, “Yoghurt”. Yet it seems that “Yoghurt” (with the ‘h’) is proper English!

Yogurt aisle in TescoI guess if we were French, we would receive specially translated software, movies, novels and recipes.  The trouble with being British is that we just get the untranslated straight American stuff, and this makes us think we know what we’re talking about when we don’t always — I didn’t know they called Yorkshire Puddings “Pop-overs” until recently, and I have heard of “Scallions” for ages without knowing that this is simply syboes!  So I have decided here to put a table of terms in the hope that it might help someone sometime! [Picture of half-litre of Laevolac]Poor Oli — she’s been constipated all week.

I took her to the GP open surgery first thing Monday morning.  We waited an age outside in the rain in line, then we waited ages indoors in the crowded waiting room.

The female GP was quite efficient as it was cold. She decided pretty quickly that a prescription of Laevolac would be in order.  (more…)

My 10-year passport expired last August, and I have been meaning to get around to sorting it out, but you know how it is when you are busy and not thinking about taking a vacation; it just got pushed to the bottom of the to-do list.

It kind-of annoys me that we need a passport to go to mainland Europe, which is pretty-much the only place I like.  For example, if you are Spanish, you can leave Spain, cross through France and even Germany (or wherever), and enjoy a vacation in Italy without requiring a passport, it is just us Brits who have to spend a fortune on passports.

According to the government website, it can cost me (more…)

Aw man, can you believe this? What’s the world coming to? [Picture of Joe Zawinul]I am sad today. It is the 20th anniversary of the death of a hero of mine – Jaco Pastorius (although he officially died on 21st, the 11th was his last day of consciousness), so I naturally browsed the web today and got a shock and a surprise — Jaco’s musical partner in Weather Report died today — the great Viennese Keyboard player and composer Josef Zawinul

Joe lost his battle with a type of skin cancer variously called ‘Trabecular cancer’, ‘Apudoma of the skin’, and ‘Merkel cell carcinoma’. He died aged 75, in his native Vienna where he ran a Jazz bar called ‘Birdland’. (more…)
