[ photograph of coffee dripper]I am thrilled with my new dripper.

This one arrived yesterday from Amazon. What’s different about this dripper is that it has a valve, so the grounds are steeped for a while, rather than simply passing through. (more…)

[Photo of We Were Promised Jetpacks taken at ABCO2 gig in Glasgow]Yesterday was my main client’s Christmas work’s lunch. The entire office (about 40 of the Glasgow team plus  contractors/ freelancers) booked a “boutique hotel” (whatever that is) on Bath Street, and we had the usual sporadically served, cold Christmas rubbish food one has come to expect after years of experience.  (more…)

[Poster of Micky Flanagan. Out Out Tour 2011]We got granny to babysit and headed for the King’s Theatre to see Micky Flanagan.  We paid over twenty quid to sit in the gods (aka “The Gallery”).  He had no support and did two parts with a 15 minute interval.  We were out before quarter to ten.  It was a Sunday night after all. [The Barber of Seville poster Scottish Opera]Last night, Mummy Ruth and I went to see The Barber of Seville at the Theatre Royal, although I guess as it was sung in Italian (despite being set in Spain), it ought to have been called Il barbiere di Siviglia, but anyway.

Now, it has to be said that I saw The Barber of Seville done in Glasgow way back in the early 1990s, and was blown away.  It set (more…)

Ride Letter Day 2011/10/10

Sunday was a Red Letter Day for us.  It was the day that DP learned to ride his bicycle without stabilisers. Yes! now all the family can ride bikes.

What we did was remove his pedals along with the stabilisers.  This gave him a “balance bike”. To be frank, purpose built balance bikes are a con when you think about it. (more…)

[B&W Pic of African Dancing]We’re back, in fact everyone’s back!  The sun’s shining, everyone’s happy. Good times!

Papa and Charlie have reported that India is really making progress (they keep on about us going out there with them sometime).  It was just magic to see them again.

My mother is back from helping out with the twins in England. Joobes is recovering well now.  We’re all so thankful for that.

Charlie took care of Oli and DP to let us grab a wee break, a much needed break, and off we went.  (more…)

My CSCS card came though at last — I sat the Construction Skills Certification Scheme health and safety test for UK construction sites when my old one ran out after five years, so that’s me sorted out for another five — and THIS time my photo actually looks like me (gorgeous) LOL.

I need this so I can attend meetings on construction sites, and so that I can take sizes and check workmanship (as well as safe working practices).

I studied (more…)

[Picture of Scottish Opera Rgoletto Poster]Mummy Ruth bought tickets for really good seats for “Rigoletto” at the Theatre Royal before Christmas, so we have been looking forward to this for quite a while.

It is difficult to get to proper opera with small children.  We make do with Classical Concerts for Children, but we cannot keep away forever, can we?  Scottish Opera is also — for us — still something of a gamble, when we remember “The Magic Flute” fiascos — but having said that,  “La Bohème” was pretty good, and “Tosca” was a good night out. Strange to think that these were BEFORE we were married — that’s seven years ago. Shockerooni! (more…)

We were sent a link to the BBC iPlayer for “10 Things You Need to Know About Losing Weight”.  It purported to have the very latest scientific tips on losing weight.  It featured Dr Michael Mosely — the chap doing the brain programmes for the BBC.  He didn’t look fat, but scans showed that he was fat on the inside. That was surprising; we’d always assumed that only those who were fat on the outside got fat on the inside.

Frankly, we were surprised that there was a surprise — and also that there was another surprise in the programme.  Hey, TWO things were didn’t actually know beforehand — well done BBC! (more…)

[Poster for Christmas Carnival with RSNO in Glasgow]Almost exactly a year ago we all went along to “Let it Snow!” at The Royal Concert Hall, so we decided to do it again.  Yesterday’s concert had no Nicola Benedetti, and it has not been a year since we last saw Owen Gunnell and Olly Cox, as we went (more…)

[Our Darvel Tickets for Larry Carlton]Unbelievable, but true… one of my heroes from when I was a teenager decided to do a gig in Darvel.  Yep, Darvel Town Hall. We couldn’t believe it, and as soon as we found out we rushed to get tickets at any cost. The great Larry Carlton, ladies and gentlemen! But Darvel? (more…)

[Picture of the kids at concert Hall]Last year we took the kids to the Royal Convert Hall to see “wacky” percussionists Owen Gunnell and Olly Cox with Nicola Benedetti in “Let It Snow!“, and today at 3pm we saw them again — in “Heroes versus Villains” Children’s Classic Concerts at the concert hall again. How appropriate; tonight we’re off to see one of Daddy Dave’s musical heroes in concert. (more…)

[picture of the cover of Whatever works]Ruthie and I just watched Woody Allen’s “Whatever Works” which came out last year.  We thoroughly enjoyed this film in all respects.

It is very New York — which is good for us; NY has been out of fashion for too long!  Larry David is brilliant as Boris Yelnikoff a grumpy old man and typical New York Jew.  We roared with laughter at times; it is a film filled with glee. But most of all it is the subliminal, underlying wisdom that clinched it for us. This film is sooo true — but in extremis! (more…)

[Bus tickets inward]DP has never been on a bus, so we decided that we would take a double decker into the city centre and back to give him that experience. Ruthie and I had never been on a bus together, and we have never travelled on a bus as a family, so what a brilliant idea!  (more…)

[Still from Certified Copy the Movie]We went to the GFT last night to see “Certified Copy“.  WELL WORTH SEEING. **** We somehow managed to get a parking ticket after 8pm!  We always park there, and have always assumed the rule to be anything goes after 6pm. Oh well, 30 quid onto the ticket price for the first night out we’ve have in 18 months. (more…)

I don’t know why, but over the last few days I have started fretting over loss of data — the kids’ pictures, work, rare music.

You see, a few years back we had problems with laptops.  It is hard to back-up data when the CD drive dies or when the power can suddenly cut in the middle of the transfer.

We lost some data, and vowed that we would never again get into this situation. The first thing we did was (more…)

My 10-year passport expired last August, and I have been meaning to get around to sorting it out, but you know how it is when you are busy and not thinking about taking a vacation; it just got pushed to the bottom of the to-do list.

It kind-of annoys me that we need a passport to go to mainland Europe, which is pretty-much the only place I like.  For example, if you are Spanish, you can leave Spain, cross through France and even Germany (or wherever), and enjoy a vacation in Italy without requiring a passport, it is just us Brits who have to spend a fortune on passports.

According to the government website, it can cost me (more…)
